The Asylum Capacity Support Group Secretariat is organizing the third technical meeting of the Asylum Capacity Support Group Dialogue Platform on “Boosting the effectiveness of asylum systems: the impact of legal advice and representation”.

In the face of high numbers of asylum applications and the challenges of mixed and onward movements, it’s crucial for asylum systems globally to boost their efficiency while maintaining quality. Legal assistance plays a pivotal role in ensuring procedural fairness and enhancing efficiency. Effective legal assistance can lead to improved understanding of the process by asylum-seekers, shortened adjudication timelines, better decision-making due to improved quality of information provided to asylum authorities, and fewer appeals and reapplications. The event will explore different approaches adopted by States relating to the provision of legal advice and representation with a view to enhancing the efficiency and fairness of asylum procedures. It will feature State experiences to collaborate with legal assistance providers to improve asylum processes, highlight challenges, lessons learned, and key considerations for integrating legal aid more effectively into asylum systems.

The meeting will be co-moderated by Ms. Sandra Wabosha, Legal Aid & Governance, Refugee Consortium of Kenya together with Mr. Daniel Kamphuis, Asylum Systems and Determination Section of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The meeting will include presentations by Mr. Rémy Munyankindi, Legal Advisor, State Secretariat for Migration, Switzerland, Mr. Eddy Sluiter, Legal coordinator, Legal Aid Board, Netherlands, Ms. Eva Singer, Director of Asylum and Refugee Rights, Danish Refugee Council and Ms. María Daniela Davalos, Director, International Protection Directorate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ecuador.

The meeting will take place in virtual format on Wednesday, 2 October 2024 from 15:30-17:00 pm CET with Arabic, English, French and Spanish interpretation.
